The term pivot has become synonymous with recent backflips in domestic and international politics. Policies such as Obama’s pivot to Asia and recent Chinese economic reforms have demonstrated society’s continual need to adapt. Yet, the resurgence of populist movements have instead represented the mounting fears of those who feel forgotten or exploited by globalisation. Regardless of circumstances, our global community will continue to experience such repositioning in international affairs.
When I announced my intention to establish this publication, the MIAS Committee and the Publications Team brainstormed names that would well define our intentions and our international relations focus. Considering a multitude of names, Pivot was seen to encompass a wide range of values applicable to our writers and readers. As the next generation of leaders, we can provide a unique insight into foreign affairs – a pivot in perspective. We can provide a resolution to a specific issue – a pivot to new solutions. We can further engage and educate our peers – a pivot to the future.
Together, let us pivot towards a more connected and informed society. This is not a publication which aims to only attract IR and politics students. Instead, we wish to educate and inform all young adults about global issues and give them a forum to express their individual opinions. As the Founding Editor-In-Chief of Pivot, I invite you on this journey with us.
Ryan Attard, Founding Editor-In-Chief and MIAS President
